I. Excelling in Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship
Objectives: The practice aims to foster an entrepreneurial culture by instilling a research and innovation-driven mindset among students, faculty, alumni, and external startups. It involves conducting innovation-focused activities, organizing workshops and seminars with entrepreneurs and investors, creating mentorship schemes, and networking with national entrepreneurship organizations. The initiative includes an incubator dedicated to developing technologies with societal and environmental benefits, particularly for rural empowerment. It also provides facilities for prototype development and IPR registration and hosts hackathons and competitions with industry involvement.
Context: With support from central and state governments, and AICTE, higher education institutions must encourage students to transform innovative ideas into marketable products. ASIET supports this by establishing a Centre for Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship, which includes a Fabrication Lab, Innovation Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Business Incubation Facility, LEAP Centre, IPR Cell, and Industry Institute Partnership Cell. These facilities offer pre-incubation, incubation, and acceleration programs to advance entrepreneurial efforts.
Practice: ASIET’s policy promotes campus-driven innovations through various bodies, including IEDC and TBI. These organizations support idea development, offer mentorship, and facilitate early-stage startups. The Fab Lab enables rapid prototyping and interdisciplinary collaboration, while the IIPC bridges academia and industry, and the IPR Cell safeguards intellectual property.
Evidence of Success: Notable achievements include 10 entrepreneurs, 12 startups, 56 patent applications, and multiple awards and recognitions, such as the “TOP PERFORMER AWARD 2019-20” from Kerala Startup Mission. ASIET has also developed essential products during the pandemic, including automatic hand sanitizer units and ventilators.
Challenges and Resources: Identifying and nurturing potential entrepreneurs remains challenging, with many students preferring employment over entrepreneurship. Government policies and educational reforms are needed to better support aspiring entrepreneurs.
Objectives: This initiative aims to advance engineering and technology knowledge through technical and humanitarian activities, facilitate networking and community engagement, support R&D, promote ethical conduct, and assist in career planning, placements, and internships.
Context: ASIET strives to be a Center of Excellence by enhancing student skills through various professional societies, including IEEE, IEI, CSI, SEEM, ASME, ISME, ISA, Robotics Society, BMESI, ICI, and ISTD. These chapters offer platforms for students to interact with professionals, participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences, and develop leadership and teamwork skills.
Practice: Established IEEE SB ASIET (2011) and other chapters, such as IEI (2018), CSI, SEEM, and ASME, conduct skill development programs, technical competitions, and seminars. Newer chapters like BMESI (2024) and ICI (2023) focus on emerging technologies and industry needs.
Evidence of Success: Achievements include multiple IEEE awards, significant grants, and national recognitions, such as the SEEM Silver Award and IEI scholarships. Student projects and innovations have also received accolades.
Challenges: The semester system limits time for participating in society activities, affecting student engagement.
Objective: ASIET integrates academic excellence with social service, inspired by Sree Sankaracharya's teachings. The Social Service Cell fosters holistic student development through initiatives like NSS, Bhoomithrasena Club, ‘Home for Homeless,’ and ‘Vidyuth,’ aligning with the institute's vision of nurturing professionals with social and ethical values.
Promoting Values: ASIET emphasizes understanding social and environmental issues, with engineering departments engaging in community-oriented projects and consultancy for local and government agencies. The NSS unit, active since 2015, collaborates with various organizations for public awareness, cleanliness drives, medical camps, and skill development programs. It has received national recognition for its contributions, including the NSS National Award in 2021.
Bhoomithrasena Club: This club focuses on environmental protection, conducting activities like pond renovation and tree plantation. ASIET's participation in the Swachh Bharat Internship Program and Paristhithikam project demonstrates its commitment to sustainability.
Punarjjani Project: This initiative repairs biomedical equipment and infrastructure in government hospitals, benefiting the underprivileged. It has restored facilities across multiple hospitals.
Home for the Homeless: ASIET, with NSS, Alumni Association, and staff, built homes for families affected by heavy rain.
Vidyuth: Launched in 2013, this project provides electricity to economically disadvantaged families, improving their quality of life.
Response to Flood and COVID-19: ASIET actively participated in flood relief efforts and contributed to COVID-19 response by providing sanitizers, ventilators, and essential supplies.
Honoring Adi Shankaracharya and situated at his birthplace, ASIET’s social service initiatives embody its dedication to education and cultural heritage, promoting both intellectual and social development.
